About JSC Tutoring

Mostly Mathematics?

Well, yes, but we offer more than Mathematics tuition.

James Collett built this web site primarily to advertise his Mathematics tutoring. His wife, Suzanne, is a qualified teacher and also offers tuition in History for GCSE and 'A' Level students and more general educational help for children in the 8-11 year-old age group. The Whys and Wherefores

I have been providing private tutoring in maths to GCSE and A Level students as an additional activity to my IT career for about ten years.

I have loved mathematics since my O Level studies, when a really good teacher took the trouble to explain the subject with care and to ensure the whole class was following it before he moved on to the next topic.

I have an honours degree in Mathematics from Durham University and an MSc in Computer Science from the University of Wales.

A number of students develop gaps in their understanding during their school career... Maybe there was the lesson here or there that did not quite make sense at the time or the topic that did not have enough time spent on it to sink in. These gaps become more and more important as the course progresses, since later topics depend on the earlier understanding. Then the student starts to struggle as the subject gets more advanced.

Often I find that my job is to fill in those gaps in understanding, like repairing the foundations.

Other students are lacking confidence and have become wary of the subject. They need the opportunity to go through problem areas again to get a better understanding, so that their confidence can return. I often find that the student suddenly "gets it", sometimes just because they've been shown another way of looking at the problem.

I like to help the students get a deep understanding of what they are doing so that they can make the maths "their own".

I provide tuition or coaching in the followiing areas.

  • GCSE - Higher and Foundation
  • 'A' Levels - A, AS and the various modules
  • Mathematics for Common Entrance

I am based in Camberley and cover the surrounding geographical areas, such as:-.

  • Camberley
  • Blackwater
  • Sandhurst and Little Sandhurst
  • Farnborough
  • Frimley and Frimely Green
  • Deepcut
  • Yateley

I have a valid CRB certificate.

I am a qualified primary school teacher. I have also been offering private tuition for about 15 years, in all primary areas of the curriculum, as well as helping with English as a second language.

My degree was in Economics with International History and I have also provided help to 'A' Level History students, particularly in developing examination skills and essay writing technique.

In my private tuition I have worked with Key Stage 1 and 2 students and have covered all areas, including maths, phonics, spelling, language skills, handwriting and simply building confidence.

I like to spend the first session doing activities and games which help me assess each student and search out any gaps in their understanding or other problem areas. My approach next is to do as many "fun" activities as needed to help them develop their understanding and gain confidence.

I communicate closely with the parents so they know what I am doing and why I am doing it and how they can help support the work I do.

I have a valid CRB certificate.
